Speed Up Your Spring Cleaning

29
Mar

The warm weather of spring is always a welcome change after a long, cold Toronto winter. If only the same thing could be said for all of the chores associated with spring cleaning! If you dread vacuuming behind the drier and purging your closet of last year’s fashions, it’s ok. The following tips from the storage experts at California Closets will help you tackle your spring cleaning quickly and efficiently.

1) Clear Out Before You Clean

Winter is when clutter really starts to pile up. So, before you haul out the mop and bucket, take a minute to clear away all of the stuff that’s collected in corners, closets, and cupboards. Our Toronto interior design experts recommend abiding by the one year rule: if you haven’t used an item (or even seen it!) in the last year, it’s time to toss it or donate it to the Goodwill.

2) Make a List and Check it Twice

And you thought lists were just for Santa Clause! Making a detailed list of all your spring cleaning tasks will help keep you motivated and focused. The Toronto storage experts from California Closets recommend creating a realistic master list with two coloumns: the first is for daily maintenance tasks (washing the dishes, sweeping the floor, etc.) and the second is for cleaning up the past (decluttering, fixing things, etc.). Creating a two column list will help ensure that you don’t fall behind on everyday tasks or become overwhelmed by the bigger annual chores.

3) Divide and Conquer

Spring cleaning can be an intimidating task, especially if your home is larger than average. In order to avoid feeling overwhelmed before you’ve even started, stop and divide your space into specific zones. Start by breaking your home down by room; then, break these rooms down even further into specific areas like closets, drawers, flooring, and bedding (in a bedroom for example). Note each of these zones on your master list and be sure to cross each area off your list once it’s been completely cleaned.

4) Stock Up on Supplies

It isn’t every day that you shampoo the carpets, so don’t be surprised if you don’t have the proper cleaning supplies readily stocked in your laundry room closet. Nothing is more frustrating then committing to a cleaning task only to have to stop half way through after running out of the proper product. Stock up on all the necessary tools (garbage bags, storage containers, soaps and sprays) at the beginning to avoid unnecessary interruptions.

5) Keep Everything Organized for Next Year

Once you’ve made it to the end of this year’s spring cleaning marathon don’t just jam your mop and bucket into the back of your utility room. Take a little additional time to ensure that your Toronto closet space is being used properly and that all of your supplies are neatly stored for next year. These are great tips! I always try and make an effort to clean out my bathroom cupboard of expired makeup and cleansers, etc. as part of my spring cleaning regiment. It helps clear up space and gets rid of pore clogging cosmetics.
